University Motto: "Wisdom and love"

Shobi University’s motto “Wisdom and love” holds the meaning of respecting beauty (shobi) to achieve higher culture (all-round education) and nurturing wisdom and love for consideration and benevolence.

The forefathers of the University founder, such as Naoshi Akamatsu, were physicians for lords of the Kasama Domain during the Edo Period. They particularly emphasized the essential nature of mankind, such as love (benevolence), which appears in the concept “Medicine is a benevolent art.” The educational policy of the University at the time of its founding was “To nurture reliable individuals with rich culture and promising musical training.” The root of the motto “Wisdom and love” lies at the core of “love,” which is the ideology of the founder who considered rich “culture” to be the “cultivation of wisdom.”

Guiding Principles for the Establishment of the University: “Courage and creativity”

Shobi University was established at the beginning of the 21st Century as a four-year university comprised of two faculties and three departments, namely, the Faculty of Informatics for Arts consisting of the Departments of Music Expression and Information Expression, and the Faculty of Policy Management comprising the Department of Policy Management.

Advanced informatization, which represents the progress of networking that made inroads during the 20th Century, promoted accelerated changes in the environment surrounding media. This brought about substantial changes to communication as well as to the world of music and art. The internationalization and globalization of society, on the other hand, had impacts on government administration, economy, culture, and lifestyles that shook the very foundation of our society, leading to an era in which new paradigms and interdisciplinary academic studies are required. The University has been searching for a desirable state of higher education from the standpoint of all-round education. It seeks to offer this education in accordance with the research topic of “Mankind and culture” and based on the University’s motto “Wisdom and love,” which expresses its fundamental stance toward mankind and learning.

Our prior institution offering junior college education was dissolved in a progressive manner so that a new university could be established that would offer four-year programs of study aimed at the substantiation of a broad yet specialized educational system. This change was made in response to unprecedented structural changes that have occurred in our society. The guiding principles for the establishment of the University are “Courage and creativity.” This is an educational policy based on the concept of always taking resolute actions with “courage,” not only in the artistic fields with a primary focus on music, but also in fields that are new to all those involved in academic studies. At the same time, the University nurtures individuals who are capable of “creating” new fields and solutions on their own and who have the “courage” to share their “creations” with others.

The University currently offers tertiary level education administered according to the motto “Wisdom and love” to provide education that is founded on the guiding principles for the University’s establishment, “Courage and creativity.”

Chronological History

   
1926: Shobi Music Academy was established by musician Naoshi Akamatsu (location: present-day Hongo of Bunko-ku in Tokyo).
1959: Shobi Music College was certified a vocational school. Naoshi Akamatsu was appointed to the post of College Principal.
1966: Kazuki Akamatsu was appointed to the post of College Principal.
1972: The College was renamed the Shobi Music Academy of the Shobi Academy Educational Corporation.
1974: Management of the Music Education Research Institute Foundation was transferred to the College.
1976: Shobi Music College was certified as a special vocational school, with the establishment of the Special Vocational School System and established diploma courses.
1981: Shobi Music Junior College (offering a Faculty of Music and Faculty of Music Information) was established. Kazuki Akamatsu was appointed to the post of College President.
1986: The Commemorative Ceremony for the 60th Anniversary of the Founding was held.
Shobi Music Junior College was renamed Shobi Gakuen Junior College, and the Faculty of Music Business was established at the same time.
1990: The Faculty of Information Communication was established at Shobi Gakuen Junior College. Shobi Gakuen Vario Hall was visited by the Crown Prince, who attended a concert.
1996: The Commemorative Ceremony for the 70th Anniversary of the Founding was held.
2000: The junior college was reorganized and transformed into Shobi University. Fukashi Horie was appointed to the post of University President.
The Faculty of Informatics for Arts (at Kamifukuoka Campus) and the Faculty of Policy Management (at Kawagoe Campus) were established.
● The International Student Exchange Office was established as the department in charge of processing the admission of foreign students as well as for academic exchange.
2003: ● The International Exchange Preparation Office was established due to the increased number of foreign student admissions.
2004: Takano was appointed to the post of Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The major in the Graduate Program of Policy and Administration (Master’s Degree Program) was established in the Department of Policy Management at Shobi University Graduate School.
● The International Exchange Center was established (as the department in charge of foreign students, language education, and overseas exchange).
2006: The major in Information Expression and major in Music Expression were established in the Department of Music Business Development at Shobi University Graduate School.
● An exchange concert was held by the sister institutions Kyungbok University (Republic of Korea), Myongji University (Republic of Korea), and Shobi University in Korea.
2007: The Department of Policy Management was established at the Faculty of Policy Management at Shobi University.
● Professors from the sister institution Myongji University (Republic of Korea) visited Japan and held the Professors’ Concert 2007.
2008: Yoshiyuki Matsuda was appointed to the post of University President.
2009: Yoshiyuki Matsuda was appointed to the post of Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
● An exchange concert was held by the sister institutions Kyungbok University (Republic of Korea), Myongji University (Republic of Korea), and Shobi University in Korea.
2010: The Commemorative Ceremony for the 85th Anniversary of the Founding was held.
● An exchange concert was held by the sister institution Myongji University (Republic of Korea) and Shobi University at the Korean Cultural Center.
2011: ● An exchange concert was held by the sister institutions Kyungbok University (Republic of Korea), Myongji University (Republic of Korea), and Shobi University in Korea.
The safety of all foreign students at the University was confirmed after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11.
2013: The Faculty of Informatics for Arts (formerly at Kamifukuoka Campus) relocated to the Kawagoe Campus, thereby integrating all faculties and the Graduate School at the Kawagoe Campus.
2014: Toshinori Tanabe was appointed to the post of University President.
2015: The Department of Music Business Development and the Department of Performing Arts were established in the Faculty of Informatics for Arts at Shobi University.
2016: Kimito Kubo was appointed to the post of University President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

We nurture personnel who have sophisticated culture and compassionate spirits, who can exhibit their capabilities in a variety of fields in society.

In April 2013, Shobi University relocated and integrated the Faculty of Informatics for Arts, which was formerly located at the Kamifukuoka Campus, to the Kawagoe Campus, where the Faculty of Policy Management has been. In 2015, it newly established the Department of Music Business Development and the Department of Performing Arts in the Faculty of Informatics for Arts, in order to provide comprehensive education that responds to the needs of our society.

The University pursues the progressive nurturing of personnel who can exhibit their capabilities widely in a variety of fields in our society, including music and other arts, information expression, policy management, sports, and culture. Education is based on the University motto “Wisdom and love,” derived from the expression “veneration of beauty” (to respect, or shobi). We continue to pass on that heritage while reforming curriculum educational methodologies and creating new traditions. We also seek to develop personnel who have sophisticated culture and compassionate spirits, with broad views imparted through participation and collaboration with projects in the local community. We take full advantage of characteristics that are unique to our University, such as the university campus in the historic township of Kawagoe.

Characteristics and Systems of Learning

Education centered around practical exercises (seminars)

Education centered around practical exercises (seminars) will be further substantiated at Shobi University. Participatory practical sessions are continuously conducted through fundamental practical sessions during the first and second years, and comprehensive practical sessions are offered during the third and fourth years to enable students to acquire practical skills and practical capabilities, presentation abilities, team-working abilities, self-producing abilities, problem detection and solving abilities, and the like, which are widely required in society, through real life experiences. Education centered on these practical sessions promotes relationships between the instructors and students, horizontal relationships among students in the same seminar classes, and vertical relationships among senior and junior students. Such personal relationships are nurtured as essential elements for success in the future.

System of Learning

The curriculum is devised to support the learning experience of each student at Shobi University, in order to assist each student in advancing toward his or her goals.

Semester System

The University adopts the semester system, with the year divided into the Spring Semester (April to September) and Fall Semester (October to March). The academic credit accreditation and the course of study may be changed for each semester. The degrees of freedom in completing programs are enhanced by this system, which makes it possible for each individual to learn in a way that best suits his or her personal character, thereby facilitating efficiency in learning.

GPA

The grade point average (GPA) is a figure derived by multiplying the academic grade for each course by the number of academic credits assigned to the course and adding up the answers for all courses taken, then dividing by the total number of academic credits earned. The GPA is suitable for assessing the overall academic performance of a student and is becoming a standard system of academic assessment, particularly in Europe and North America. The assessment makes it easier for a student to verify his or her own academic achievements, promotes motivation to learn, and facilitates the systematic completion of learning. Proactive efforts are being made to incorporate an internship program for every department. The opportunity to learn the business while gaining practical experience at work within enterprises makes it possible for students to acquire knowledge about the mechanisms of companies that is difficult to learn from seminars alone. In this model, they learn methods of identifying and solving problems based on personal experience, as certain skills can be acquired only by working at business sites. The abilities gained and experiences earned will be useful for students in exhibiting their immediate adaptability as an asset for the employer after they graduate from the University.

Advisor System

Each student is assigned a dedicated instructor who will gain an understanding of the student’s learning status, personality, and future goals. The instructor will offer personal consultations regarding the student’s progress of study and chosen career path, as well as student life at the University. The student’s plan for the completion of learning is formulated based on his or her objective academic performance as evidenced by his or her GPA as well as the goals the student aims to achieve. Assistance is provided so that the student can have a significant and beneficial student life that maximizes his or her academic capabilities.

Flexible Learning that Crosses Over the Boundaries of Academic Faculties

The number of academic credits that must be earned for required courses and elective courses are stipulated for each faculty and department. The completion of “interfaculty free elective courses” is permitted for a part of elective courses at the University, and the academic credits earned from completing such courses are counted towards the number of academic credits required for graduation. Learning from studying in elective courses given by other faculties can offer a positive stimulus and broaden one’s interests as well as knowledge.

Professor Fumio Goto(後藤 文夫)

Graduated from the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts and graduated from the Master’s Degree Program in Music at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts. Awarded the Ataka Prize given by Tokyo University of the Arts to superior graduates. Studied euphonium under Hibiki Minowa, Toru Miura, and the late Kiyoshi Oishi. Held nine recitals. Participated in numerous concerts and recording sessions primarily in the field of wind instrument music until 1988. Formed the quartet “Shishiza” comprised of euphonium and tuba and participated in eight scheduled performances and various concerts in 1989. Professional activities switched to tenor tuba and bass trumpet player in philharmonic orchestras from 1986 year on and participated in concerts and recordings of NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and the like and gained popularity. Authored the book Easiest Lessons for Euphonium: A Book for Creating Your First Sound in 1995. Appointed to the post of Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Japan Euphonium Tuba Association for six years beginning May 2000.

Professor Shunichi Furuyama(古山 俊一)

Graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University. Joined Keio Electronic Laboratories (present-day Korg Inc.). Took charge of sound design and other tasks for models MS20 to M1. Established Studio Erehwon and resigned from former employment. Produced music for commercials and events such as exhibits using computers and electronic musical instruments. Produced and conducted research into multimedia works created by combining acoustics. Authored many books and produced videos related to electronic musical instruments and digital acoustics. Took charge of visual effects for the musical drama “Schubert” staged by the University. A member of the Information Processing Society of Japan, a member of the Japan Synthesizer Professional Arts, and former Committee Chairman of the Media Contents Committee at the Association of Musical Electronics Industry (AMEI).

Professor Takashi Nagi(奈木 隆)

Graduated from the Drama Course at the Toho Gakuen College of Drama and graduated from the Master’s Degree Program at the Graduate School of the Open University of Japan. Joined an avant garde drama group “Kobo Abe Studio” and participated in performances given at five major cities in the United States, then was casted primarily for musical performances on stage at Tokyo Disneyland, Ongakuza, and the like. Appointed to the post of Show Production Manager at SCW and launched “Sanrio Puroland” in 1989. Established GoodStaff Inc. in 1992. Produced a musical review at the Ocean Dome of Seagaia in Miyazaki Prefecture. Appointed the post of Producer at the Toyama Citizens Cultural Public Corporation in April 2009 and appointed to the post of Artistic Director in April 2011. Staged “Hello Dolly!” for the first time in Japan in February 2012 at Aubade Hall and received positive evaluations from various newspapers.

Graduated from the Faculty of Zokei at Tokyo Zokei University. Presented works of sculpture (stone sculptures) primarily at Nika Art Exhibitions. Awarded prizes for the works entitled “Clouds” (Special Selection Prize), “Guwa” (Association Supporters Selection), “Moon” (Association Supporters Prize), “Time on Island” (Rome Prize), and “Meteor Shower” (Member Recommendation) at the Nikka Art Exhibits. Awarded prize for the Town with Sculptures Contest sponsored by the Foundation for the Promotion of Chofu City’s Culture and Community and publicly installed the work entitled “Dream of Child.”
Awarded prize (Tochigi Prefecture Governor’s Prize) for the 10th National Cultural Festival at Tochigi and publicly installed the work entitled “On the Balloon.” Participated in the 4th and 10th Tokamachi Stone Sculpture Symposiums. Installed the work entitled “Shape of Star” exhibited at the Selected Modern Art Works held by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. A member of the Nikka Association. Authored books include The Self and the Society: An Introduction to Social Psychology (author and editor) and In-Basket Game for the Development of Management Capacity (co-author), among others. Part-time Lecturer and then Assistant Professor of Faculty of Letters at Keio University before arriving at the present post. Authored books include Modern Society of Japan as Described by Commodities, Keio University Press, 2004; Archeology of Perception and Recognition, Yuzankaku Publishing, 2004; Archeology of Glass Bottles, Rokuichi Shobo, 2006; Archaeological Sites and Artifacts in Historical Documents, Keio University Press, 2011; and Archeology in Popular Culture, Doseisha, 2014.
